It began with a vision…
Dr. Leslie Meyer founded the Meyer Center in 1954 with a simple vision: in the right environment, any child can learn. Today the Meyer Center remains dedicated to enriching the lives of children with disabilities so that they might reach their full potential.
Our History Timeline
2024
1955
The Meyer Center hired the first teacher, Miss Ethel King, to help Dr. Meyer move toward his vision of a quality education for children with disabilities.
1961
As word began to spread so did enrollment in Meyer’s school – 20 children accepted.
1968
The Greenville County School System provided a teacher’s salary plus one aide.
1972
Enrollment at the school increased to 28 with a focus on pre-school aged children.
1983
The name was formally changed to the Meyer Center for Special Children.
1997
The Meyer Center relocated to its current location at 1132 Rutherford Road and became a Greenville County Charter School.
2004
50th Year Celebration! The Meyer Center celebrates five decades of providing special education to the Greenville community with a concert featuring Greenville’s own Edwin McCain.
2014
This marked the 60th year of enriching the lives of preschool children with disabilities.
2017
South Carolina Public Charter School District approves charter application.
2019
Completed Building for the Future Campaign to include repairs, renovation, and expansion.
2022
Added 11th classroom bringing enrollment to 108.
Now, the Meyer Center has been leading the way for decades.
What began as a dream in Dr. Meyer’s heart has grown over the years to become an indispensable part of the Greenville community. The Meyer Center continues to grow and innovate, providing critical educational and therapeutic services to children with disabilities. It is a testament to Dr. Meyer’s vision—as well as to the support of the Greenville community—that the Meyer Center continues to help so many wonderful children reach their potential.
